Right Livelihood in Business with Steve Demos

I have worked closely with Steve Demos over the past 15 years, and in this conversation we explore his perspective on building businesses that serve both people and the systems they operate within. Steve founded WhiteWave in 1977 and later scaled it—including the soy milk brand Silk—to over $300 million in revenue before its sale to Dean Foods. He went on to found GoodBelly in 2008, a company my agency Refresh helped bring to market.

In this conversation, we explore:

  • Steve Demos’ perspective on building businesses in alignment with the systems they operate within
  • Right livelihood as a foundation for business and leadership
  • How organisations can align purpose, profitability, and long-term impact
  • Building companies that outperform conventional models while contributing positively
  • The role of leadership, generational shifts, and timing in systemic change
  • What it means to operate as a visionary ahead of prevailing market norms

PS: This conversation was filmed at a farm outside Boulder, Colorado. You may hear occasional ambient sounds — part of the setting — though most have been edited out.
